1x12 "Leach"
AKA the episode in which everyone speaks in aphorisms and cliches. No, really. Narrative and character aside, I think this is the most poorly written episode yet. *eyeroll* I almost think it's a joke, except no one ever recognizes ALL the stupid cliches so it reads as poor writing.

Whoops! These got long, so it's time for some cuts.

HAHAHAHA! Lex shows up and Mommy Clark runs away so Clark and Lex can have a moment. (I was gonna make a strike through joke here, something about a lovers spat, but I couldn't come up with something to go outside the strike through because THAT SCENE REALLY WAS THE MENDING OF A LOVERS SPAT).

Victoria: We could have been great together.
Lex: I plan on being great all by myself.
Alina: HAH!

So here's the first time we see Clark problem-solving without the help of his powers. I've been looking forward to seeing Clark deal with a non-supernatural problem, but this should be a fun twist on the so-far-standard narrative.

Or... not. Rather than having Clark solve a problem without powers, TPTB took a shortcut and let lightening and meteor rocks solve the problem (a solution which was SCREAMINGLY OBVIOUS, I might add).

Observation: Everyone except Clark (and sorta Kyle Tippet) who has contact with the meteor rocks is Evil, Bad, Wrong. Varying degrees of evil, but still all definitely bad. For a show that seems to be heading down the dubious morality path (uhh, Lex EVERYTHING), that's surprisingly and disappointing black and white.

Admittedly, I did like the Lex bits of this ep, with the deciding to trust Clark (for now) and being sad because his dad's an ass.

1x13 "Kinetic"

3 minutes in and I'm more engaged with this ep than the previous! Lex! And Chloe (who is rapidly becoming my second favorite character, what a shock)! In Lex's house! Bad guys! Teleportation! A fake arm! WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG.

Kavin Smith! (Which reminds me: I really should make a Canadian Actor Bingo card, since I'm planning to watch this whole series in more or less one go.)

WHOA. Paused the ep to write the beginning bit and Clark-in-profile looked EXACTLY like a guy I know. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeird.

OH GOD. To be able to chop wood like that for winter? YES PLEASE.

Also, SECONDS after I mention that Chloe's one of my favorites, she goes out the window in a near-fatal fall. WTF?

Awww, floppy disks.

Clark: I am sorry [...] for letting you get hurt.
Chloe: Well I am perturbed with you, Clark. I'm also mad that you didn't prevent the Chicago Fire of 1871, or prevent the fall of the Roman Empire, making you directly responsible for the dark ages.
See? CHloe FTW!

A meat locker. SERIOUSLY?

And that's all the explanation we get for the arm? Something DEFINITELY ended up on the cutting room floor.

Lex: Clark, you can't save the world. All you'll end up with is a messiah complex and a lot of enemies.
Clark: I saved you, didn't I? That turned out alright.
Alina: *headdesk*

Lex: I think this could be the start of a very inetesting partnership.
OH GOD LOVE TRIANGLE IS GOING TO BECOME A LOVE SQUARE, ISN'T IT.

1x14 "Zero"

HOLY SHIT LEX.
No.
HOLY SHIT!
This intro has NOTHING on the last!

Oh, PLEASE let this be the knife stabbing story!

Seriously? Lex drinks appletinis? (I accept that ordering 2 of the same drink is narratively easier. However. It means Lex drinks appletinis.)

Ohhhhhh, upside down, straightjacketed, in pain Lex!

I have thinky things to say about Lana and her lack of inner strength (despite various people in the narrative saying she's strong and brave and all). She's been the damsel in distress a bunch, and the gal who sits at home while the boys go off to save the world even more often. The last two episodes were prime examples of this, and even this ep. We see Clark set Lana on the path towards a better buisness plan, and we hear her tell Lex that she was helped along by Clark, but we never hear how much effort Lana put into the project! *squinty eyes* I'm watching you, show (... duh).

There might be more to say, but I'm currently distracted by scared, in-pain Lex.

The light on Daddy Kent and Clark in this scene is--
HOLY SHIT. Dead cows. That took me TOTALLY by surprise. (Such that I said "holy shit" out loud and startled whoever was in the hallway just now.) And this is DEFINITELY a set up.

And way to rip my heart out, Daddy Kent. Usually your pissyness at the Luthors does nothing for me, but the way this scene played out was wonderful (and a little bit upsetting, in the best possible way). MY HEARTSTRINGS. THEY HAVE BEEN TWANGED. FOR EVERYONE.

(Was going to say that the clouds and the light quality arre beeeeeautiful! I dunno if it was fully staged or natural light helped along by lighting gear, but that amber and pink glow of a sunset behind thick clouds was perfection!

I feel like we're starting to up the stakes with this ep. It's a choice I approve of WHOLEHEARTEDLY.

Props to Michael Rosenbaum for the upside down scenes. That's an INCREDIBLY physically taxing position. (I sat partially upside down for a painting for maybe 25 minutes and it took me a solid hour to bounce back. Suspended? Well done, sir.

Well, that's a plot twist I didn't see coming! That makes two separate times this ep has taken a sharp left turn. I approve!

Wait, wait. We've seen the shooting 3 different times, and it's been 3 different stories. WHICH ONE IS REAL? I'm not sure that I trust Lex's version of the truth (though I do trust his intention, and want to give him hugs).

I was asking for a non-supernatural problem. Guess this is it! And it didn't come with the "sometimes human beings are scary and corrupt" lesson (ala Torchwood's canibalism ep) I expected. I kinda feel like the "oh, he just looks like the guy you may or may not have killed" explanation was rather rushed, but that's a fairly small nitpick.

OH LEX. OH CLARK.
OH CHLOE.

I just want to hug them all but especially Lex.

Question: In doctor shows, narratives revolve, in part, around the Patient of the Week. In sci fi shows, it's the Monster of the Week. So what's the parlance for this show? Meteor-rock-user of the week?

Awww, floppy disks.

This shouldn't have made me laugh as hard as it did, but HOLY CRAP this show is TEN YEARS OLD. *still giggling*

Chloe! \o/

Seriously? Lex drinks appletinis? (I accept that ordering 2 of the same drink is narratively easier. However. It means Lex drinks appletinis.)

And *this* makes me laugh because I'm pretty sure I read thoset exact sentences--or something very very close to them--in people's ep responses ten years ago. Lex + appletini never makes more sense, apparently! Hee. *g*

Yup, "Freak of the Week" was it. Or FotW, if you're nasty lazy.
